Christian Benday\u00e1n zeigt den Amazonas nicht als idealisierte Landschaft oder mythisches Territorium, sondern als sozialen, urbanen, widerspr\u00fcchlichen und zutiefst menschlichen Raum.<\/p>\n

Seine Arbeit entsteht aus einer genauen Beobachtung des Alltags in der amazonischen Stadt: aus Begegnungen, Stra\u00dfenbildern, Musik, religi\u00f6sen Riten, lokalen Festen und den sozialen Spannungen, die das Leben in Iquitos pr\u00e4gen.<\/p>\n

Dem Blick von au\u00dfen, sei er romantisch, wissenschaftlich oder dokumentarisch, setzt er eine Sehweise entgegen, die aus eigener Erfahrung in Iquitos entsteht und auch die Br\u00fcche der Region sichtbar macht.<\/p>\n

In seinen Werken begegnen sich Welten, die auf den ersten Blick kaum zusammengeh\u00f6ren: Religiosit\u00e4t und Nachtleben, Intimit\u00e4t und \u00f6ffentliche Inszenierung, popul\u00e4re \u00c4sthetik und kunsthistorische Bez\u00fcge, lokale Bildwelten und globaler Konsum.<\/p>\n

Benday\u00e1ns Blick kann sich dem Allt\u00e4glichen und Vertrauten ebenso zuwenden wie dem Unbequemen oder Provozierenden.<\/p>\n

Ein stilles Portr\u00e4t kann darin mit derselben Ernsthaftigkeit behandelt werden wie gesellschaftliche Konflikte oder die Schattenseiten des urbanen Lebens.<\/p>\n

Auch \u00e4sthetisch nimmt er sich diese Freiheit. Seine technisch anspruchsvolle Malerei verbindet sich mit der Bildsprache von Plakaten, Bars, Bordellen, religi\u00f6ser Ikonografie, popul\u00e4rer Dekoration und kommerzieller Unterhaltung.<\/p>\n

Triviale Alltagskultur und popul\u00e4rer Kitsch stehen in seinem Werk gleichberechtigt neben klassischen malerischen Traditionen.<\/p>\n

Ein zentraler Aspekt seiner Arbeit ist die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Exotismus. Benday\u00e1n unterl\u00e4uft das Klischee, das den Amazonas lange als fremde, wilde, zeitlose oder ausschlie\u00dflich nat\u00fcrliche Welt dargestellt und seine Bewohnerinnen und Bewohner zu Statisten einer exotischen Kulisse gemacht hat.<\/p>\n

Er ersetzt dieses Bild jedoch nicht durch ein neues, vereinfachtes Gegenbild. Vielmehr erweitert er das Blickfeld um Erfahrungen und Lebenswelten, die in romantisierenden Darstellungen des Amazonas kaum vorkommen. Menschen mit ihren pers\u00f6nlichen Geschichten, Begierden und Konflikten treten in den Vordergrund. Das Religi\u00f6se steht neben dem Profanen, das Sch\u00f6ne neben dem Obsz\u00f6nen, St\u00e4rke neben Verletzlichkeit, Festlichkeit neben sozialen Konflikten, \u00fcberlieferte Bildwelten neben den Zeichen der Gegenwart.<\/p>\n

Diese Offenheit hat Benday\u00e1ns Werk immer wieder kontrovers gemacht. Doch hinter dieser Intensit\u00e4t steht eine jahrzehntelange Besch\u00e4ftigung mit der Geschichte, Kunst und visuellen Kultur Amazoniens. Als K\u00fcnstler, Kurator und Herausgeber hat er wesentlich dazu beigetragen, die Wahrnehmung amazonischer Kunst innerhalb Perus und international zu ver\u00e4ndern. Seine Bedeutung reicht deshalb \u00fcber seine eigene Malerei hinaus. Benday\u00e1n hat den Raum dessen erweitert, was amazonische Kunst sein und zeigen kann. Darin liegt auch die politische Dimension seines Werks.<\/p>\n

Er behandelt den Amazonas weder als blo\u00dfes Symbol noch als exotisches Spektakel, sondern als gelebte Erfahrung, durchdrungen von pers\u00f6nlichen und kollektiven Geschichten, in denen \u00fcberliefertes Erbe, koloniale Geschichte und urbane Gegenwart aufeinandertreffen und kollidieren. Der Amazonas erscheint nicht l\u00e4nger als Kulisse, sondern als Gegen\u00fcber.<\/p>\n

Christian Benday\u00e1n geh\u00f6rt zu den pr\u00e4genden K\u00fcnstlern und Kuratoren der zeitgen\u00f6ssischen amazonischen Kunst.
Seine Arbeiten wurden international in Museen und Kulturinstitutionen gezeigt;
