What it’s about
My name is Rolf Friberg. I am the founder and curator of Anturion Gallery, dedicated to contemporary Amazonian art.
My years in the Amazon were shaped by encounters with its people, living with them in the rainforest, and discovering a profoundly different way of life.
These experiences made me aware of how intimately all living things are connected, an insight that today shapes my curatorial work and my way of looking at the world.
What inspires me
Indigenous wisdom is not something of the past – it is a sustainable way of life based on belonging to a living world.
Contemporary Amazonian art is the visual testimony of this worldview.
Its visual language, myths, and cosmologies show us not as separate from nature, but as part of a living whole
Why it matters
Amazonian art carries an ancient indigenous wisdom – a fundamental attitude toward existence that values balance, kinship, and mutual respect.
Bringing this heritage into contemporary dialogue is of great importance.
It honors voices that have long been overlooked and opens paths to a more balanced relationship with the natural world.
Ancestral Avant-garde
Recognizing indigenous thought and artistic creation as ancestral avant-garde is a vital insight in our time, for it offers reorientation toward a more just shared future.
At its core, this art offers an essential insight: that we are participants, not dominators, in the natural world.
It calls on us not to possess the world, but to dwell within it and to perceive anew who we are and always have been.
What I do
Through exhibitions, lectures, and digital media, I share this stance and invite exploration of the world of contemporary Amazonian art.
Even though the works speak for themselves, their depth unfolds only through knowledge of their cultural origins.
Precisely establishing this connection, passing on the sense of interconnectedness, and inspiring others to their own discoveries: this is the essence and joy of my work.
Art doesn’t change the world, but it changes how we see it
I am convinced that art possesses the power to touch us, to connect us, and to bring about change.
Contemporary art from the Amazon deepens understanding between cultures and invites us to engage more consciously with our world.
It is the living voice of an ancestral culture
Its worldview and knowledge are an enriching contribution to the challenges of our time.
We are committed to conveying this message and making it visible.
Get in touch
We present art that is inseparably linked to the Amazon region and its people. The protection of this habitat and respect for the rights of its Indigenous peoples are of great importance, not only ecologically but also culturally.
Anturion Gallery supports initiatives working on the ground in support of these efforts.
