Origins
My name is Rolf Friberg, founder and curator of the Anturion Gallery for contemporary art from the Amazon.
The gallery grew out of the years I spent in the Amazon, living and working alongside people from different communities.
We present artists whose work offers insights into one of the world’s most culturally diverse regions.
Worldview
The Indigenous worldview is not a relic of the past.
In many parts of the Amazon, it continues to shape cultural identity, daily life, and people’s relationship with nature.
Amazonian artists give visual form to their myths, legends, and traditions, keeping them alive for new generations.
Significance
These works express experiences and worldviews that are often overlooked in global discussions.
They broaden our understanding of culture and identity, and remind us that there is more than one way of making sense of the world.
At the same time, they offer different perspectives on how people, communities, and the natural world are connected.
Ancestral Avant-garde
Ancestral Avant-Garde stands for a present in which inherited knowledge continues to act.
It opens a space where the familiar appears less self-evident and the relationship with nature becomes tangible as something fundamental.
It is an invitation to question certainties and to see the seemingly familiar in a new light.
What I do
Through exhibitions, talks, and digital media, I invite audiences to discover the world of contemporary Amazonian art.
Many of these works speak for themselves. At the same time, they gain depth when understood in their cultural context.
Making these connections and inspiring people to engage with the art and culture of the Amazon is one of the most rewarding aspects of my work.
Art doesn’t change the world, but it changes how we see it
I am convinced that art has the power to touch us, to connect us, and to bring about change.
Contemporary art from the Amazon deepens understanding between cultures and invites us to engage more consciously with our world.
Drawing on cultural traditions and forms of knowledge developed over generations, it offers perspectives that remain highly relevant today.
