Brus Rubio

My art reflects the joy of developing a unique perspective
that engages with the world,
transporting me to a realm of magical realism.
My goal is to preserve the customs and values. of my people,

to investigate ancestral traditions, the history,
and the mythology of our wise men.

My art draws inspiration from traditional ceremonies and visions of our ancestors, to transcend them through time.

 Ancestral Visions, Contemporary Realities

Brus Rubio is an Indigenous Peruvian artist whose work reflects a profound connection to the natural world, ancestral traditions, and the complex social and political realities of the Amazon. His art channels joy inspired by gods, mythical beings, and sacred rituals, capturing the intrinsic magic of the rainforest’s ecological richness.

Rooted in the traditions of his ancestors—transmitted through song, vision, and oral memory—Rubio’s paintings radiate deep reverence for biodiversity. His dynamic compositions celebrate life, the minga (collective work), and agricultural practices, preserving ancestral wisdom within a contemporary visual language.

Beyond aesthetic expression, Rubio’s art confronts urgent social, historical, and political themes. He sheds light on environmental degradation, the historical violence of the rubber boom, and the ongoing challenges of corruption and external exploitation threatening Amazonian territories.

His artistic path has carried Rubio from his Amazonian homeland to cultural hubs such as Lima, Paris, Washington, Havana, Miami, and Shanghai. In these environments, he “Amazonizes” urban space, infusing the city with the spirit of the rainforest and offering new ways to experience Indigenous worldviews.

Through this dialogue between jungle and city, Rubio bridges ancient wisdom and contemporary urgency. He invites us to reflect on humanity’s relationship with nature and our shared responsibility to preserve life in all its forms.

His work stands as a luminous testament to the living heritage of his people and the enduring strength of the Amazonian spirit. It is an act of both resistance and celebration, transforming each canvas into a space where ancestral memory meets the challenges of our time.
